El Mandado

A glass Tribute to the “bolsa del mandado”
(in other words, daily market goods to prepare food)
presents pieces with some witty Mexican phrases
that make the market (tianguis)
a unique and fun experience.

In Mexico, who doesn't know a typical bolsa del mandado?

Since Aztec times, the market or tianguis, from Nahuatl tianquiz,
was the center of social and economic life where people met
to buy and sell their products or perform barters.
To go grocery shopping, "hacer el mandado”, women used baskets or
colorful bags made of ixtle – a natural fibre obtained from the maguey cactus–
to carry their groceries.

Over time, bags made with natural materials were
replaced by multicolored plastic mesh.
These bags have also made their way into the world of
domestic and international fashion.

My interest in culture and carrying on with my quest to represent with glass other materials that provoke doubt as to their nature, since 2017 I have experimented, played,
designed and interweaved colorful transparent and opaque glass stringers, which with help of light, suggests plastic mesh, and is then molded to project the movement, wrinkles and volume of the typical “bolsa del mandado” that emerges from the frame and takes us for a stroll through the traditional Mexican market.
